Angry Birds meets bubble shooter in an all-new and puzzle game. Use your slingshot to match and burst colorful bubbles, save exotic critters, and pop the piggies. Strategic and intuitive gameplay make for a challenging bubble popping experience.
Gameplay 93%Angry Birds POP is a Bubble Shooter, and while it adds different objectives for variety, it’s the same gameplay of the genre since Puzzle Bubble came out 22 years ago. You can a set of colored bubbles on the screen, and you throw your own bubbles at them. If you make a match of 3 or more bubbles, they’ll “pop”, and if they have bubbles of another color attached below them, those bubbles will fall down and pop too, boosting your score. Usually a level is complete once you pop all the bubbles, but you have to be careful since you have a limited amount of bubbles you can throw, so make every shot count. And some levels also have a time limit. The control is pretty simple, you simply touch the screen to aim the slingshot where you want, and you can even bounce the bubble on the sides of the screen for angled shots. Also, if you tap on the bubble on the left of the slingshot, you’ll switch to that color. When you take aim, you’ll see a dotted line showing you the trajectory the bubble will take, but it’s limited, and doesn’t show you how it will bounce, but there’s a booster to give you extended aim and show you the whole path. There’s also a booster that eliminates a whole row of bubbles, one that pops all bubbles of the same color of the one it touches, a rainbow bubble that matches any color, and a bomb bubble that explodes taking all the bubbles close to it. There are different missions like making the green pigs fall down, where you need to break the platforms where they’re standing. Said platforms can be made of ice, which are broken by a single shot, wood, which take 2 shots, or stone, which you can’t break, but you can pop the bubbles around it to make it fall. There’s a variant of this kind of level where a single pig is in the middle of a set of bubbles in a round shape, and you shoot at it, the whole set of bubbles spins around depending on the angle of your shot. Besides the platforms where the pigs stand, there’s another type of obstacle, the Dark Bubble. These recover their own color once you shoot at it. There’s a type of mission where you fight an evil angry bird, that every 5 turns makes green pigs on the lower part of the screen convert a few bubbles into dark ones. In normal missions there are flowers in the lower part of the screen, and when you make bubbles fall down, depending on where they land they’ll give you points. The flower in the middle gives you a higher score than the ones at the sides.
Graphics 99%Angry Birds POP features excellent 2D hand-drawn visual art. The characters and backgrounds are colorful and the animation is great. The animals are very expressive and the whole game just comes alive with every shot you make. The bubbles have many added light effects, and you can see them glow and shine depending on what’s happening in the game. The backgrounds are animated and look beautiful. Overall, is one of the best 2D looking games available today.
Production Quality 93%The bubble shooter genre is pretty popular among mobile game developers. There are thousands of them available for tablets and smartphones, but only a handful really try to make something different to stand out gameplay wise, and Angry Brids POP is one of them. Besides having different objectives for each level for variety, each bird you play as has its unique special shot that you charge up as you pop bubbles, besides the common boosters they all can use. The rotating set of bubbles with the pig int he middle is something pretty original that gives the game a feature not seen in other similar titles, and sometimes level objectives are mixed up so it gets more challenging, like having dark bubbles in a mission where you have to get rid of all pigs. It’s also worth mentioning that there’s a lot of voice work in the game, each character makes many sounds depending to the action going on, and along with the great graphics and music makes the whole experience really entertaining.
