Gameplay 91%

Blossom Blast Saga is a puzzle game where you draw a line connecting flower buds to make them bloom and explode in a shiny mass of petals. Just touch a bud of one color, and drag your finger to the neighboring flowers of the same color, if at least 3 are connected, the last one will get the “blossom power” of the whole line and grow up, the rest will disappear. Blossom Blast Saga Screenshot 1   In the top of the screen there’s a blossom energy bar that shows you if the last bud will bloom or not. If you manage to power it up completely by connecting enough flowers, the elements in the line will start shaking and the final bud will bloom in a huge blast of golden energy, affecting nearby buds too. When a flower blooms completely, it explodes making the surrounding buds grow, or depending on their growth stage, also bloom completely. You can create big chains of blooming flowers in the whole garden by making a blossom blast in the right place. There are also “big buds” that have a number on them, and get energy by connecting them to buds of their own color or blasting flowers next to them. When their counter reaches zero, they unleash a powerful blossom blast that makes buds close by grow up a lot. The objective of a level can be to reach a certain score, blast all the big buds, or clear the garden from obstacles such as clay pots, weeds or crystals over the buds. They’re all affected by blossom blast, but buds trapped under a crystal can’t be used to start a connection, however they can be part of a line if you start it on a bud on the clear part of the garden. There are also power ups you can use like a shovel that lets you pick any flower or object and take it out, or a watering can that makes any flower grow to the max and explode. You can buy them any time using the buttons on the lower part of the screen. As you advance in the game, you’ll see levels marked with a skull over a black space in the world map, which have very tough challengers to overcome, so better prepare yourself with power ups, and you may need a few extra turns to win.

Blossom Blast features awesome 2D hand-drawn artwork. The flowers look great, with every stage of their growth portrayed with much detail, and when they explode there are light effects and petals flying arond all over in a cool animation. Blossom Blast Saga Screenshot 2   When you start connecting buds, you’ll see each space being highlighted, the flowers glowing and a flashing line appear, and when you release your finger you’ll see everything move smoothly, new flowers enter the garden from above and the falling animation looks nice and bouncy. Also the breaking animation of pots, crystals and how you start getting rid of weeds has many stages, and you can see how you affect these obstacles with blossom blasts. The world map looks like a painting, and when you scroll there’s parallax scrolling for a 3D feel. You can see clouds, mist, and dandelion flowers flying in the wind. It’s pretty detailed, and just looks beatiful. The game’s mascot is a bee that appears to give you tips and activate power ups, and while you don’t see it much, it’s very expressive and has many motions, perfectly animated to give a pretty lively feeling to it. The garden is mostly a green background with color grading and small plants here and there. It could’ve have other stuff like leaves on the wind or small animals passing by, but still, nothing to really complain since the elements you interact with take your whole attention all the time.

Production Quality 98%

There are many puzzles that use the “connect at least 3 elements with a line” gameplay dynamic, but the way Blossom Blasts applies it with the growing flowers gimmick it’s something pretty original, and makes for a unique experience. Blossom Blast Saga Screenshot 3   You may have tried out similar games such as Jelly Splash, and it may seem that it plays the same, but after a couple of levels you’ll realize how deep, challenging and addictive this gameplay formula can get. All levels are designed with a unique challenge to overcome, and you never think you’ll playing the same level again like it happens in most puzzles. Blossom Blast doesn’t have as many levels as other popular puzzles, but 120 unique challenges to overcome should be enough to keep you busy for hours, and even hardcore Match-3 fans will be trying two or three times before beating a stage. It’s worth mentioning that the music is very relaxing and doesn’t seem to be a short loop like in other games. The same song plays in all the world map sections, but it doesn’t seem to get old, and the sound effects fit the game just fine.

Value for your Money 70%

Blossom Blast is free on Google Play and the Apple App Store. You won’t see any advertising, but there are in-app transactions. You buy gold with real money, and you need them for extra turns, which get more expensive as you advance through the game, power ups, and lives. If you lose all lives, you must wait several minutes before being able to play again, and when you reach a new section on the world map, you have to wait days, invite friends or pay up, so you may feel like the experience is a little broken.
