Gameplay 89%
Guns of Boom is an online multiplayer FPS where you get into Team vs Team Arena DeathMatches with people all around the world, and your objective is to eliminate as many members of the rival team as you can before the time limit.
When a battle starts, you appear on a battlefield with other 3 players in your squad, and you have to search for the enemy players and take them out, while taking care not to get eliminated by them.
The controls are simple. In the bottom left corner of the screen there’s a virtual joystick that you use to advance, retreat or strafe left and right. To look around and aim, just touch the center of the screen, and drag your finger around. When an opponent appears within your sight, you’ll automatically shoot him. On the right side, you have a buttoin to reload, zoom in, throw a granade and use a medkit.
Your teammates have a blue aura surrounding them, and your opponets are highlighted in red, so you can distinguish them easily while running around trigger happy. When you die, you’ll respawn after 5 seconds in a random location so you can continue hunting down the enemy team.
After the time is up, the team with the most kills wins, you’ll get a reward according to your performance, and you’ll go to the menu screen, where you can customize your character, upgrade weapons, buy new different and more powerful guns such as pistols and shotguns, and armor equipment like helments and kevlar vests.
Graphics 86%
Guns of Boom has colorful cartoony 3D graphics, maybe inspired by the popular PVP Arena Shooter Team Fortress 2. It looks like an average PS2 game.
When you shoot, you can see the bullet shells flying around, and the bullet effects are cool looking. The explosions look weird, since it has a “BOOM” text appearing and the blast itself looks more like a painted cardboard box than a fire effect, but still, it adds a certain comic relief to the title.
The game runs pretty smoothly even with lots of action going on, and the characters animations are well done. For the most part, the game looks good, but it isn’t the best looking FPS available now for a mobile device; maybe the developers didn’t wanted the highest quality graphics to make this title available for users with a low powered device.
Production Quality 95%
Guns of Boom has fast dynamic gameplay with simple controls, lots of arenas and about 50 weapons to choose from. It looks and plays great for a mobile shooter, and best of all, you can play it for free.
After a short tutorial, you’ll jump right into the action, and after a couple of minutes you’ll be blasting your way in the arenas. You can play in the middle of the day in a farm, or at night in some city alleys. The level design is great for hidding, jumping over building roofs and popping out around corners before discharging your whole gun clip at an enemy.
There are lots of options to level up and personalize your character just the way you want, and while some items are bought only with real money, there are enough items and equipment available that you can get just by playing.
Value for your Money 90%
Guns of Boom is free on Google Play and the Apple App Store. You won’t see video ads or anything like that, but you can get the game’s currency through in-app transactions. It doesn’t seem to be a “pay to win” kind of game, and there’s a good balance among all players, but certainly it’ll be easier to increase the kill counter for those that buy premium weapons.
